Tokaido Gourmet "Tororo Jiru" (grated yam soup)
depicted in the paintings of Utagawa Hiroshige

Chojiya is a long-established store that has been in business for more than 420 years in Mariko, Suruga-ku, and was also depicted in the ukiyoe Maruko from the Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido by Hiroshige Utagawa.

Founded in 1596, the restaurant has been renovated due to age, but it still retains its original architecture and appearance and continues to serve the same "Tororo Jiru"(grated yam soup) as it did 420 years ago.

The store is also a popular tourist destination, with a history museum in the spacious inn-like store.

Store introduction

The exterior with, its thatched roof, is the very definition of ukiyoe. Even if you've never seen the painting, it's a visual reminder of history.

The painting here is "Mariko" from the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. This store depicted here is the "Chojiya". If you look closely, the signboard says "Tororo Jiru".

The hallway is quaint with a sense of history. Moving forward, large and lined with banquet room like seating.

A large hall with a retro atmosphere, with a view of the garden from the window.

It took a while to get in because there was a long line. but there is a limited variety of menu items, so the offerings are quick.

Basically, choose a set menu with "Tororo Jiru" as the main dish. The simplest set is the "Mariko". There are also "Honjin" with dessert and "Fuchu" with fried yam.

There is a wide variety of side dishes that can be enjoyed with alcoholic beverages.

You can also enjoy exclusive dishes made with yam, and sashimi, and other Shizuoka-style gourmet.

This is the drink menu. Original sake, craft beer, and other liquors that are exclusive to Chojiya.

The classic Tororo Jiru set meal,"Mariko"

This time I chose the "Mariko". Tororo Jiru, barley rice, miso soup, pickles, and condiments only. The fried yam in the top left corner was ordered separately.

Lots of yam! and refillable barley rice!

This is the Tororo Jiru made of high-grade yam, which has a history of 420 years.

It comes in a large bowl, but this is a one person meal. It's enough for three or four bowls, and you can eat a full meal.

The bowl of barley rice is shared by the group. It's such a large portion and serves two people, so small eaters may not be able to finish it.

By the way, you can also get a refill if it's not enough.

Pour plenty of it on and eat it all at once!

Pour in a generous amount of Tororo Jiru to cover the barley rice. The table manners here is to sip at once while making noise.

The texture of the Tororo jiru, which is rich in dashi, is very mellow, but once in your mouth, you can proceed to eat it without it sticking.

The sweetness and saltiness are exquisite, and the flavor of the dish spreads in your mouth.

Of course, the high-grade yam itself is a feast, but the flavored broth is also a key factor. Those who have only eaten yam without dashi may be surprised at the difference.

Three kinds of deep-fried yam, you should also try this one! It's like a croquette because the yam potatoes are fried, but the texture is completely different.

Crispy on the outside, melty on the inside. The flavor of the grated yam will fill your mouth! Each topping - shirasu, shiitake and nori - is accented with a different taste.

History Museum for Tokaido

Moving forward of the entrance is the Historical Museum.

Along with other Ukiyoe from the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, there are also old documents from Mariko and Shizuoka. This museum is open to visitors without eat.

A statue of Jippensha Ikku, known as the author of the Tokaidochu Hizakurige, and tools used in his travels were also on display.

It's a small museum, perfect for a quick after-dinner visit.
